IN CONVERSATION WITH BRO PAUL....Can we live together before marriage?....Letter to my friends(8)

Dear Friend,

Over the years I have had several conversations with my father in the Lord, always wanting a clarification of why he does some things in the ministry or an interpretation of a scripture or an explanation of a Christian doctrine. I have found such conversations immensely beneficial in my life and ministry.

Recently, I asked him again to help shine light on a couple of ministry decisions that I wanted to take, and I was blown away with his usual candour. I asked him to allow me to publish some of our conversations and he agreed! Below is an excerpt of some of our 'tough talk'. Enjoy.

On what is the position with long time relationship known as common law marriage(no marriage, but couples are living together as husband and wife, and they are expecting a child)

Bro Paul:

1. It is not good for children to be born out of wedlock.
2. Since marriage is God's idea, it is an earthly union with a heavenly sanction. The law can grant license, parents can grant consent, but only God can join. "What God has joined together, let no man put apart".
3.  The couple needs to be persuaded to do a registry wedding, and then have their marriage blessed by the church in a private ceremony. They can then have a big wedding later. However, the big wedding would only be for fun as it has no spiritual significance. As Pastors, we deal with many people whose lives are irreparably damaged because of the way their parents conducted their affairs. They owe it to the unborn children to do it right.
4.  If the man is able to share accommodation elsewhere while things are put in place, all well and good. If not we can't force them, even though it is not ideal. In such a case it will show the people do not wish to be pillars in the church in the future. As they cannot tell other people to do what they were not prepared to do. This is now a case of true commitment.

Bro Paul’s conclusion:
The point at stake in the two cases is whether or not the people involved want to be their best for Jesus, or are happy to be on the fringe of things. So it is really only members who are true disciples and who really want to follow Biblical standards that can follow this guidance. The others are people who are only happy to just attend church. It is the level of commitment that dictates how strictly we apply the rules. That was why Jesus was only able to take 3 or 4 disciples with him on serious issues: Mount of transfiguration, Gethsemane.
